Kinds of Signals available in Automatic Territory (Rule 3.12)

Multiple aspect colour light signals are provided in Automatic area                                                                                                                     The signals are of four kinds : -                                                                                                       1. Automatic Stop Signal.
2. Semi-Automatic Stop Signal.
3. Manual Stop Signal.
4. Semi-Automatic Gate Stop Signal.
5. Modified Semi-Automatic Stop signal

Automatic Stop Signal-

1.   It is not dependent upon manual operation.
2.   It assumes “ON” and “OFF” aspect automatically by the passage of the train.
3.   It is normally provided between two block stations.
4.   It is identified by ‘A’ Marker plate.
5.   Normal aspect of the signal is `Proceed’ but if the next signal is a manual one normal aspect displaced may be Caution or Attention.(Rule 3.37)
6.   LP can pass the signal at “ON” without any authority.

 Semi-Automatic Stop Signal-
1.   It is capable of being operated either as an automatic stop signal or as a manual stop signal as required
2.   It is normally provided at wayside stations where crossing/precedence takes place.
3.   It is distinguished by “A” marker light.
4.   When it works as an automatic stop signal, it assumes “ON” and “OFF” aspect automatically based on the condition of the automatic signalling section ahead.
5.   But when it works as a manual stop signal it assumes “ON” aspect automatically by the passage of the train and assumes “OFF” aspect when operated manually.
6.   When a Semi-Automatic stop signal works as an automatic stop signal, the “A” marker is illuminated, but when it works as a manual stop signal, “A” marker light is extinguished.
7.   When it functions as Automatic LP can pass the signal at “ON” without any authority but when it works as manual LP shall not pass the signal at “ON” without the prescribed authority (T/369(3b)).

Manual Stop Signal-

1.   It is a Signal which is operated manually and cannot work as an Automatic or Semi automatic stop signal.
2.   It is not distinguished by any Marker.
3.   Normal aspect of the signal is danger.
4.   LP shall not pass the signal at “ON” without the prescribed authority (T/369(3b)).

Semi Automatic Gate Stop Signal

Ø  It is provided at LC gate in Automatic area.
Ø  It is identified by “A” Marker light and “G” Marker plate.
Ø  For the signal to assume “OFF” aspect the automatic signalling section ahead must be clear and gate must be closed against road traffic.
Ø  When the signal becomes defective LP can pass the signal at “ON” if “A” Marker light is lit. But if “A” Marker light is extinguished  he shall pass the signal at “ON” by following the procedure for passing a gate stop signal with “G” Marker at “ON” ( Rule 3.73).

Modified Semi-Automatic Stop signal
Ø One of the Automatic stop signals between two block stations may be converted as Modified Semi-Automatic Stop signal and connected to station in advance and under the control of SM.
Ø When A marker is lit it works as Automatic and when extinguished it works as manual.
Ø When LP comes across this signal at danger with A marker light lit he shall follow the rules for passing Automatic signals at On.
Ø If A marker is unlit he shall contact the SM of the station in advance and act per his instructions.
Ø If he is unable to contact SM he shall wait at the signal for 5 minutes and thereafter pass the signal at ON and run at speed not exceeding 10 kmph till he reaches the foot of the next signal and act as per the aspect of the signal and report about the failure.
