Duties of LP

Reporting for Duty

  • Report to duty well in time, with neat & tidy uniform after taking proper rest.
  • Do not consume Alcoholic drinks / sedatives, 8 Hrs before joining duty & while on duty.
  • Bring adequate Food, Water, Tea etc.
  • Carry personal store, bright torch & cotton cloth etc.
  • Read, understand, note down & acknowledge
  • SOB & Caution order
  • Safety circular / bulletin
  • Correction slips
  • Do breathalyser test
  • Sign ON in CMS/register & give mobile No. You are carrying
  • Collect Keys / handles of Loco.

 

Taking over charge

  • Ensure Loco is secured.
  • Ensure under truck safety fittings intact / no abnormality.
  • Read repair book & inform PRC any abnormality.
  • Examine the Loco & ensure all oil levels, coolant etc & record it.
  • If engine is dead crank as per procedure.
  • Check availability of safety items & expiry date of FE.
  • Check the working of HL, AFL / FL, ML.
  • Ensure Sand boxes filled with dry sand/spare sand bags available/working of sanders.
  • Ensure sufficient MR, BC, BP & FP pressures.
  • Ensure both end BP / FP angle cocks are in proper position and additional COCs are open.
  • Ensure both truck Brake cylinder Isolating COC in open position.
  • Ensure Loco brakes in applied condition.
  • Ensure skids / wedges are removed before moving loco.
  • Ensure filling cap is closed after fuelling.
  • Ensure working of hand brake.
  • Ensure cab & look out glass are neat.
  • Drain moisture from reservoirs.
  • Keep RH in neutral, GFS off, raise engine RPM & ensure no leakages
  • Ensure all Switches, Breakers & COCs are in proper position
  • Ensure dead Loco is fit to run & repair book / Handles are available if attached.
  • Ensure coupling is properly coupled, locked & operating handle properly secured.
  • Other end coupling secured
  • All hose pipes properly secured
  • Inform PRC about any abnormality
  • Ensure valid BPC is available or conduct GDR check
  • Conduct Continuity test & ensure ALP has checked working of D1 emergency valve.
  • Collect Caution order, read & ensure in proper order.

Attaching Loco to Train

  • While attaching loco to the formation stop before 20 meters, move slowly to couple.
  • Ensure proper locking of coupling & safety key inserted / CBC operating handle secured properly.
  • Ensure hose pipes properly coupled, Angle cocks are in proper position & no leakage.

 

Starting of train

  • Ensure Signals are taken OFF correctly /proper authority is issued.
  • Call out signal aspect with name, loudly and clearly.
  • Exchange signal with guard.
  • After starting passenger trains, ensure passengers are boarded before picking up speed.
  • Continuously observe signal aspect till passing it.
  • Stop immediately, if signal is put back / no light.
  • Ensure points are properly set.
  • Conduct brake feel test, if felt poor stop the train & check formation.
  • Never hesitate to apply emergency brake to avoid SPAD / any unsafe condition.
  • Never discourage or scold ALP for applying emergency brake.

 

On run

  • Conduct brake power test at first opportunity, judge braking distance & regulate speed suitably.
  • If brake power is felt poor, reduce speed & clear the block section cautiously & check formation.
  • Remind the ALP reg. C/O is available or not in the section with location in advance.
  • Call out the location of CI/TP/TG & look out for BF.
  • If indicators are not available remind ALP in advance.
  • Repeatedly callout CD is approaching & control the train properly.
  • Frequently look back while passing CD spot & observe Hand signal & stop if any abnormality.
  • Exchange all right signal with Guard after clearing CD spot.
  • Call out approaching of Warning board (P/G) / Non block station warning board 
  • Call out aspect of signal loudly & clearly, with name of signal & station, from where it is clearly visible.
  • Never guess the aspect of signal & physically ensure it.
  • If aspect of distant is not sighted from Warning board control the train.
  • Call out KM No. of Distant signal if it is caution/attention.
  • While approaching danger signal repeatedly call out aspect till stopping.
  • If Home signal’s aspect is not visible from Distant signal, call out repeatedly ‘Home signal may be danger’ and reduce speed suitably to stop at Home signal.
  • If train speed is not reducing adequately, ask ALP to apply D1 Emergency
  • Continuously observe signal till passing it
  • Ensure points are properly set
  • Never hesitate to apply emergency brake to avoid SPAD / accident
  • Be alert and vigilant while on run
  • Do not do any trouble shooting / deviate attention while approaching signals / CDs
  • While approaching danger signal keep hold of Emergency brake till train stops & apply if necessary
  • Ensure fouling mark is cleared
  • Whistle intermittently while approaching LC Gate
  • Look out for any road vehicle approaching/obstructing
  • Look back frequently for any abnormality/gate man’s hand signal while passing LC gate
  • Before looking back ensure no Signal post, OHE mast is nearer
  • Look back frequently for safe running of train
  • Stop train immediately if any abnormality is noticed
  • Whenever BP drops / AFI deviates automatically on run, switch ON FL manually even though AFL is working
  • Exchange all-right signal with guard & station staff
  • Send ALP for locating & assisting / resetting ACP/ICC, to attend leakages/brake binding
  • If skidded wheel is noticed reduce speed to 30 KMPH, stop train after clearing section & check the flatness. Permitted level of flatness in loco/coaches is 50mm & in wagons 60 mm
  • On noticing fire, stop train, quickly use fire Ext. to extinguish it. If not successful isolate it.
  • While on run observe OHE, track & train running on the adjacent line. If anything noticed abnormal, take necessary action to prevent accident.
  • Always keep train under control & never over speed.
  • While working CLE, couple MR & BC Eq. Pipes wherever possible, otherwise couple BP. Ensure Brake application & release before moving. Check brake power and judge braking distance and regulate speed accordingly.

Whistle intermittently while approaching

  • LC gate, Area of restricted visibility, Tunnel / cutting
  • Area of trespassing, Run-through station

                                        After stopping

  • Keep Loco brake & Train brake in applied condition (A9– minimum reduction or more if required) till signal clears
  • Check the under truck for all safety fittings intact & no abnormality
  • Ensure Axle box temperature is normal
  • Drain moisture from all reservoirs
  • Examine Loco compartments & ensure no leakage/Unusual sound/abnormality
  • If any abnormality inform act accordingly & inform PRC
  • Never leave Loco unmanned without properly securing

 

At Destination

  • Keep train brakes & Loco brakes in applied condition
  • Check & record Oil balance. Also record all abnormality / repairs
  • Hand over charge / secure properly & shut down Loco
  • Hand over keys / handles to CRC/SM and undergo breathalyser test
  • At crew lobby record punctuality, all defects of signalling / track & Loco / unusual occurrence
  • Sign OFF
  • Take proper rest before reporting to next duty. Update G&SR & Accident manual with all correction slips.

 

Accompanying dead loco

  • Collect walkie-talkie & detonators
  • Ensure hand brake is working, adequate skids/wedges available
  • Be alert continuously while on run & if loco gets uncoupled
  • Immediately apply hand brake
  • Inform LP/Guard
  • Secure the loco with skids & Keep ballast under all wheels
  • Protect the loco with detonators.

 

Loco disabled on run

  • Do not do any trouble shooting while approaching CD spot / signals
  • Try to clear section by rolling (without allowing MR dropping below 6 kg)
  • After stopping keep SA9 applied & A9 in Emergency position
  • Do not release till Loco ready to restart / Assisting loco attached
  • If Loco is not ready within 10 min.
  • Ask for relief Loco
  • Apply hand brakes of Loco & secure with wedges / skids
  • 10 wagons next to Loco and 5 wagons next to BV or 1/3 wagons (whichever is more)
  • In Passenger train apply hand brakes of BV/IC & secure wedges below end coaches
  • Also secure with ballasts if required

                                        After accidents

  • Switch ON FL
  • Ensure that Loco & Train brakes applied
  • Protect the train with detonators
  • Assist Guard for giving first aid / sending message
  • Perform duties of Guard also if he is incapacitated
  • Do not disturb any clue (protect any clue)
  • Note: In addition to above Follow all rules mentioned in G&SR, Accident manual, & instructions issued by administration time to time.
